The Quirky Peko Peko, South Melbourne

Submitted by on May 28, 2009 – 2:04 am6 Comments

Intro: Totally quirky Japanese & Taiwanese influenced eatery, catering for the small and large appetites.

Details: 190 Wells Street South Melbourne Phone (03) 9686 1109

Surroundings: Little picture frames with black and white animated characters adorn the walls, sweetly casual and sociable atmosphere.

Liquid consumption: Green Tea Latte- smooth and an excellent alternative to the traditional latte.

Entree: Just Wings– golden battered wings with the flavours of five spice salt was unbelievably addictive. I could have eaten ten of these myself….but of course, I had kept my cool in front of my peeps…little do they know…

Main: Pros: The menu here is hilarious. It separates the meals according to your appetite from small – large dishes with quirky dish names like Pop Chicken (v. Popular), Chicken Dance etc… Cons: This place is a 2 minute walk from my residence, possibility it can send me broke!

Crispy Honey Beef (bento box)– fried mini strips of tender battered beef, then wok tossed with fresh vegetables and an amazing honey soy sweet sour sauce. This literally, bursts in your mouth, with immense flavour that makes you boast about how good your meal is compared to those of your friends. Side condiments include spring rolls, fresh green beans, steamed rice and sweet dipping sauce.

Dessert: If only…

Bring a date here? Yes, hurry up.

Night out with friends here? Yes, but if there are 4 or more of you, perhaps book yo.

Service: Prompt and friendly.

$$$: Large mains 11.50, Entree: 8.00

Food Rehab Verdict: Sent me to food rehab (book this place now! Wowzer) – Greenlight

Times revisited: 16

I like this place too! Especially the Yasai itamedon. There’s a semi-private room upstairs that’d be great for a night out with friends. :-)

This is a great post! Would you be interested in seeing your work about local places syndicated on local news blogs? See Fitzroy for example. Many local bloggers are contributing. There’s no advertising and no exploitation of your content – just a convenient way for local people to read local news. To contribute please add suburb categories, tags or labels to your posts, such as ‘South Melbourne’, ‘Melbourne CBD’, etc and let me know you’ve done this. RSS feeds for these tags are created and added to the local news sites. You may find that syndication brings more traffic to your blog and more comments from readers!

This place looks great, I haven’t dined out much outside of the city, but I’ll give this place a try for sure!

    • Adrian says:

Hey Tom- its a pretty quirky place and gets packed out most nights. What’s great about it is that there’s meal for everyone from meat lovers to vegetarians. I’ve tried most items on the menu but their specials keep it interesting.
