Intro: To think that it all began with a spa at Hepburn Springs…luckily, things don’t usually go to plan

The Story: So in between playing with my new kitten, skiing and eating at Mt Buller, although not part of my annual leave plans- we decided to head up to Hepburn Springs for some much needed R&R. Can you feel me?

I’d heard some good things about the Lake House from fellow foodies, so we decided to relinquish our hunger pains there once our dip in the mineral spas was finally over…inhale…exhale…

Surroundings: Linen draped tables, wide expansive windows giving elevated views across the lake and its wildlife.

Mains: There were way too many choices which is a good thing but bad when there are a few of you. To ease the pain, we opted for the Express Lunch menu- two courses and a glass of bubbly.

The famous Lake House Caesar Salad (above). Now that’s what I’m talkin bout! A Caesar salad with the right amount of dressing, fresh anchovies, creatively presented, shavings of parmesan and crisp well washed cos lettuce. What blew me away were the twists- prosciutto rather than boring bacon and a deep fried bread crumbed poached egg. All locally sourced and produced- amazing I tell you.

I love how a simple dish like the Caesar, that when prepared with fresh produce and slight twists to the core ingredients, can result in such an impressive work of delectable food art.

Mushroom Soup with foam- I wasn’t even up to my main and was already sent to food rehab!

Closed my eyes during the devouring of this entrée journey.

Lake House Cassoulet- braised lamb shoulder served with white bean and garlic crumb. The crunchy bread crumbed topping complimented the tender lamb and its fellow condiments with each scoop- serving a similar purpose to crumble to the humble apple pie.

Service: The lovely waitress was great and knew the menu line items like the back of her hands, even explaining where each ingredient was produced. She also gave us directions to the Chocolate Mill..LOL.

Ahhh…I find myself sometimes questioning my love for chocolate. I think our relationship has its ups and downs but we’ve lasted this long (27 years) in fact- not all couples can speak of that longevity.

    1. oh you must! It was real good I tell you. The best thing about it was the going during the week not having too many cars on the road, the restaurant and the chocolate mill practically to yourselves. 😛

    And I haven’t made it to the Chocolate Mill as yet. Must definitely put that one on the list for the next visit over there.

    1. It was amazing! On a funny note- the lovely waitress also mentioned you guys, recalling you were taking photos a while ago… LOL
      I’m glad we were able to take decent photos- I went to Meat & Wine Co last night (the Wagyu rump was to die for) but the candle lit atmosphere was not great news for my photos 😛
