The Tastebud Travels- Green Eggs to the infamous Vanilla Slice in Sorrento

Where did I go?

This month, my taste buds took me to Sorrento. A hugely popular Victorian holiday destination on the Mornington Peninsula. Known for its beaches, cafes and historic buildings. The nearby beaches at Rosebud is where you’ll find my friends and I having seaweed fights during summer.

What prompted this visit?

Was pretty random actually. We were all deciding where to meet up for breakfast on the weekend. After many email trails, all votes were counted and a road trip to Sorrento was set.

Surroundings: Open spaces, walls adorned with local artworks, communal tables available.

Mains: Continental Green Egg Omelette (below) filled with Wilfred spinach and grated cheese. Breakfast just becomes more exciting when its served in a pan rather than a plate. It reminds me of breakfasts at Beaches Cafe in Port Douglas where my friends and I spent the week eating at during one of best friend’s weddings. Oh good times..

The eggs were cooked perfectly, not overly dry or undercooked. Fluffy being the operative word with generous amounts of cheese. Cheese is king.

Poached Eggs (above) on toasted muffins with hollandaise sauce- Florentine. Of course, this wasn’t enough, so a side of bacon and mushrooms were also ordered. Mushrooms were nicely buttered and juicy.

Soy Latte- creamy froth and generous in size.

Dessert: I’d heard great droolworthy recommendations about the infamous Vanilla Slice at Just Fine Food. I tell what- it was worth the trip alone. Gah! I was in hysterics.  When I was growing up, my mum used to always quote that famous line of wisdom ” son, patience is virtue,” mainly due to the fact that I had to have all the Matchbox car models. Remember them? So oldskool.  Anyways, in this instance, this advice was wisely acted upon. I insisted that we eagerly wait for a fresh batch to come out.

We ordered three servings. The fresh custard cream filled goodness just melts in your mouth riding its way down like a sweet tsunami over your taste buds. Although,  the crisp flaky pastry didn’t stand a one second chance homeboy!

It was as if a tornado hit town, ripping off the pastry roofs without hesitation. The tornado being me of course. My friends are way too polite.

You sensing the natural disaster theme here?

Scones were as equally impressive- dense, most and buttery served with lashings of dollop cream and local raspberry jam. This deserves the Scone Hall of Fame award. Slap me!

DSC00129Is there a scone heaven?

Bring a date here? Idea- for kicks, you have a cream and icing sugar fight! If you’re into that sort of thing. Each is their own. Personally, I’d rather not waste the fine food.

Out with friends here? Sugar highs for all.

After such a delightful meal, we headed for the Queenscliff Ferry. Only thing was, our stomachs, being way too bloated, did not agree with the ferry trip! Eeeeek!

    1. Hey Penny- I know right?! They were better than I expected them to be. So creamy indeed. Yes, we should all go for a gastronomical trip somewhere. Summer is on its way!

Hey April- LOL- cheers. My crazy mind tends to describe my culinary experiences quite strangely. Yes- I love breakfast served in a pan. Adds to the experience.
