Geektastic Supernova Comic-Con + Asian Dessert House, Passionflower CBD

I must have been hiding underneath a rock because I knew nothing about Supernova until this year. My dream has always been to attend the New York Comic-Con. A friend of mine (who is also  pop culture obsessed) and I were discussing the X-Men Phoenix Saga (geektastic, right?) when he asked whether I was attending Supernova. “Supernova?!” I asked.  His face immediately turned sour, like he’d eaten a whole lemon right then and there. Such betrayal to the cause. So soon after, I purchased my very first Comic-Con convention tickets…ever! EVVVER! I was already thinking what costumes I should wear on this splendid occasion.

How is this food related? Well, it’s not. The bottom half of this post is though.

Despite having pre-purchased tickets, we waited in line for over an hour. However, we did have an abundance of entertainment as you can see below. Held at the Melbourne Showgrounds, the event was filled with everything that would please a geek’s heart: comics, samurai swords (fake of course), cos play, Darth Vader and random Manga characters just walking around as well as  their real life human creators  signed anything you wanted  within reason. I say this because the person in front of me brought his whole library of damn comics for Chris Claremont to sign. By the time it was my turn, Chris had to grab another texta.

Here come the pictures:

Reeeor! I purposely cut myself out of this photo. I felt that I was stealing her thunder.

The main reason why I was so excited, was that I would get to meet Chris Claremont (above). This guy is a comic book legend who penned The Uncanny X-Men , a series that I’ve been collecting for over 16 years. He developed Wolverine and many other characters who remain to be my favourites. I just purchased all the comics featuring Xmen’s Psylocke, an Asian ninja with telepathy and telekinesis powers!

Dessert at Passionflower

Details: 2/168-174 Bourke Street, Melbourne VIC 3000 Phone: (03) 9663 0033

After a long day of walking around living out my inner geek, it was time to transform back into the food blogger that I am SUPERGLUT to find my friends and I a sugar fix. Located just on the corner of Russell and Bourke Street is a quaint dessert house. And by dessert house, I mean a dessert house. Not one that also serves Pork Chop on Rice but one that only serves up the one thing we actually want: JUST DESSERT!

Things to note when coming to Passionflower: Before 7:30PM, there is no minimum charge. After 7:30, it’s $10 per head.

A decent Asian Dessert House in Melbourne’s CBD  has been a long time coming and there aren’t that many to to start off with. I’d heard some mixed reviews about Passionflower but with each of those reviews, there would always be a few positive highlights so I decided to check it out. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that Passionflower is the best Asian dessert house in Melbourne, but to date, it’s the only one I’ve been back to more than a few times and it does manage to serve up most of things I like as well as being conveniently located smack bam in the middle of the CBD.

In terms of the atmosphere, think music on full bass,  kitschy lights with some great artwork drawn on and a Gen Y crowd willing to brave the cold weather with a bowl of ice cream.  There are glutinous sesame rice balls (very good), crepes plus they do great version of Taro ice cream with creamy almost buttery tones reminding me of the Filipino version: Ube Ice cream.

Other killer ice cream varieties you must try are Burnt Caramel that was hugely popular at my table, pumpkin and sticky rice.  You can either have your ice cream in a waffle encased bowl or a martini glass.

I don’t know what it is with Asians (myself included) and our love of floaties in drinks  i.e. pearl, mini pearl, sago, coconut jelly, aloe vera jelly just to name a few, but if you’re into all that, then this place would be your calling.

Did this place send me to Food Rehab? Yes. Why? The Taro Ice cream.

If you’re not already signed up for updates from Food Rehab, get on the list and I’ll do my best to keep us learning about none-other than glorious, GLORIOUS food! Also, follow me on Facebook (NEW!) or Twitter if you have either of those addictive things.

Keep eating,

Adrian

  1. I’d been to Passionflower in Sydney and loved it there so I was excited enough to try the Melbourne store during its first week. I was little disappointed with the rude service and the high prices, but the food was still undeniably good.

I haven’t felt the need to go back there though, even though I pass it almost every day. If I’m in Sydney again soon, I think I’ll pop into the one there instead – I hate to say it, but they’re much friendlier in that store!

    1. Yes, service the first time wasn’t great but the last few times have been good. Prices are quite high, but you can’t beat the location and it a great quickfix!

  2. A friend of mine has been flying over to LA for their Comic-Con every year for many years, as she and her husband are working on a documentary about it. SO ENVIOUS. One day, I will meet Nathan Fillion, and we will get married. Except he’s probably a leeeetle too old for me. Hmm.

My brother still gets really upset at me when he remembers that, when I was little, I bought a first edition of the very first X-Men comic, and then a week or so later managed to tear a big rip in the front cover. :S Don’t you hate me too!

    P.S. OMG DESSERT HEAVEN.

    1. OMG!!! You had the first edition of the very first X-Men comic!!!?? I couldn’t hate you 🙂

That’s so cool and despite the rip, can be worth a small fortune!

  3. What fun – going to Comic-Con and especially meeting Chris Claremont.
And the desserts look fabulous. Caramel ice cream is one of my favorites too, its always good…

  4. I saw that on tv and thought ‘gee some people go through a lot of effort for this!’ I was expecting to see you in a costume too! ;-D I think we have the same Passionflower in Sydney and the ice cream is so delicious there! I love durian, black sesame, green tea, red bean…yum!

  5. Hey, Superglut, where’s your caped sidekick SuperKitty? I wanted to go to Supanova in Sydney because they had the cast from I Dream of Jeannie. Seeing the de Lorean is a good substitute, though.

  6. Wow, the Passionflower in Melbourne seems so different to the one in Sydney! Is it just a cover charge of $10 a head or do you actually get desserts for it?

  7. Went to my first ever convention last weekend (Smash) and I must say, it was pretty darn awesome! I didn’t dress up but now seriously thinking of what to wear for next year’s!

  8. I’ve been scheming for years on how I can finance a DeLorean for myself. One day, it will happen.

I’ve never been to a Comic-Con, and haven’t really read that many comics. But I am a fan of Lobo’s four-issue miniseries!

  9. Arghhhhhhh… This looks like sooooo much fun. I’d love to go to one of these conventions. I love dressing up, and y’all look so happy. It’s on the bucket list! Desserts looks A*Mazing!!!
