Babka Bakery

Intro: As the queue grew, so did my hunger pains

Details: 358 Brunswick St Fitzroy, 3065 (03) 9416 0091

Surroundings: An abundance of freshly baked goodies show themselves off as if they were in a cat show in amongst their temporary homes (trays)- little do they know I could devour each one of them before they even get a chance to cool down.

I gave the mille feuille a verbal warning “watch your creamy sliced back!”- at this point I was thankful that a friend was there to intervene. Or was it the staff member who gave that “oh my god, I hope I don’t serve that frrreakin nut” look…..

Mains: I found out about  much hyped Babka from fellow food (and furry feline) obsessed colleague Ms J* when we were on the topic of the beloved Pear Tarte Tatin. However, upon ordering, I found out that they didn’t have any in pear.

I had to stop myself from shaving down my credit card to the fine point of a shiv and stabbing myself in the throat.

Luckily for me and for everyone around- they had an Apple Tarte Tatin!

I put this in the oven for a few minutes and served it with double cream. Although, the succulent caramalised royal gala apples (I believe) were mouth watering on their own, the pastry being so dense and buttery, literally sent me to food rehab.

Mille Feuille filled with strawberry delights created taste bud frenzy with its creaminess, crisp light pastry..I could go on and on really.

Hoska. Braided Egg Bread- Perfect when lathered with butter. It’s a tough call to choose between the Babka or Glicks version. I’d hoover down whichever comes first!

Bring a date here? Hmmm, if you’re both up for waiting?!

Out with friends here? I’d suggest going during the weekdays

Service: Just dandy

Food Rehab Verdict: Sent me to food rehab (Wowzer) – Greenlight

    1. Yes, I gotta try their savoury items. There problem was that there were too many choices. I nearly left with an empty wallet!

    1. Hey Lorraine- Glicks are great too. Their baked cheesecakes and egg breads are favs of mine.
I love the fact that the owner still works in the bakeries after all these years and you definitely can taste the passion and tradition in the delectables produced.
